Habits

In the app: Habits

Habits come in two kinds:

  • Build — something you want to do more. Marking a day records that you did it, and the grid glows softly on kept days.
  • Avoid — something you’d rather not do. Here the intention is met by absence, so the daily action is logging a slip when it happens; clear days are the quiet, glowing default.

Consistency shows as a soft density grid, never a streak counter — because a streak that breaks can trigger a shame spiral, and one missed day shouldn’t erase weeks of care. On reflection pages your habits are clickable, so you can step straight into any one’s detail and history.

A build habit can be daily, weekly, x per week, or hourly. Hourly is for repeatable care inside one day: a walk, a glass of water, a stretch break. Set a target like 4× per day; each check is one point toward that target. A partly met day shows as partial, and the day becomes kept when the target is reached.

Reminders stay gentle. Daily habits can remind once per day. Hourly habits can remind again while the day’s target is still unmet, spaced out so they remain a nudge rather than a nag. Once the target is reached, reminders rest for the day.

A habit’s detail page keeps the softer history: entries show the calendar day they count for, with the completion time muted beside it when a time was recorded. The calendar can also back-fill a past day; that day is where the habit counts, even if you recorded it later.

When a habit is resting, the list page moves it below active habits and softens its card with a small pause marker. Rest is visible without being treated as a failure state.

Why it’s here. Streak mechanics work against a nervous system prone to all-or-nothing thinking. A density view says: a gap is information, not a verdict. The pattern over a month matters more than any single square.

A contemplative thread. Right effort in Buddhism is balanced, not grasping — neither slack nor strained. A density grid models exactly that: you keep gently returning, and the returning is the practice.
