A field guide to Gentleward
Guide
What each area is for, and the idea underneath it.
Gentleward is a quiet companion for noticing which inner state you’re in, understanding what that state needs, and moving, gently, toward regulation. It does not diagnose, treat, nag, or grade. Rest is allowed. A stopped session is not a failure. A quiet day is still a day.
The one idea everything hangs on
Your autonomic nervous system — the part of you that runs underneath thinking — moves between a few recognizable states. Polyvagal theory names three branches (ventral vagal safety, sympathetic mobilization, dorsal vagal shutdown) and two healthy blends. Gentleward turns those into five plain names you can actually feel for:
- Safe & Social — calm, connected, present.
- Flow — energized but safe; hyperfocus that feels good.
- Mobilized — anxious, driven, “too much”.
- Stillness — restful, safe to be still.
- Shutdown — numb, foggy, flat, “not enough”.
Flow is the regulated version of mobilization; stillness the regulated version of shutdown. Telling collapse apart from rest, and flow apart from anxiety, is the whole point. Every screen reads from the same five-state vocabulary, so nothing ever drifts into a sixth, vaguer feeling.
Why this shape, for an AuDHD nervous system
Autistic and ADHD nervous systems often run hot or cold, swing fast, and pay a steep tax for shame-based “productivity” tools — streak counters that punish a missed day, apps that nag. Gentleward is built the other way around. It is state-responsive: the home screen changes what it shows and how it speaks depending on where you are. In shutdown it goes minimal and warm; in flow it gets out of the way; in stillness it asks nothing of you at all.
But none of this is exclusive to an AuDHD nervous system. It’s designed for one — the gentleness is load-bearing, not decoration — and the underlying practice is simply human: pause, feel where you are, meet it honestly. Anyone can use Gentleward this way, as a quiet method of tracking the self — noticing your states, learning your own patterns over time, and tending to whoever you happen to be on a given day. You don’t need a diagnosis to want that.
A contemplative thread
Under the psychology runs an older idea, drawn lightly from Buddhist practice: that the first move is always to notice without judging — to meet whatever is here with curiosity rather than a verdict. Checking in is a small act of sati (mindful attention). Allowing a hard state to be what it is, without grabbing for a fix, is a taste of equanimity. None of this is required, and none of it is dogma — it’s simply the grain the app is cut along. Take what helps; leave the rest.
